 About Liverpool Liverpool is one of the main cities in the United Kingdom, important industrial and commercial port, situated on the Irish Sea coast of Northwest England where the River Mersey flows into the sea and forms the Liverpool bay. World wide famous for its football clubs Everton F.C. and Liverpool F.C., the city will also hold the European Capital of Culture title in 2008. Liverpool was founded in 1207 by King John who wanted to create a port in the region that was free from the control of the earl of Chester. The golden age of the city began in the 18th century when trade from the West Indies brought wealth to its citizens. In the beginning of 19th century one third of the world's trade was passing through the Liverpool’s docks. Most of the major buildings in Liverpool were constructed in this century and a wonderful example of the finest Georgian and Victorian architecture. The city is also world famous as a home city of the Beatles. John Lennon was born here during one of the German air-raid on October 9, 1940. |
