About Madrid As a capital city Madrid is situated in central Spain. The city was first mentioned in the middle of 9th century as a small Muslim palace with citadel possessed by the moors. It was founded on the bank of river Manzanares. In 1085 Alfonso VI captured the citadel from the Muslims in his campaign towards Toledo. He turned the mosque in the church of the Virgin of Almudena. After the unification of the kingdoms of Castilia and Aragon into modern Spain, Madrid was chosen for capital in 1561. Felipe V was the king who erected lots of prominent buildings in Madrid. Palacio Real de Madrid was built during his reign. Many cultural and tourist sites can be visited in Madrid. Here is the so-called "Golden Triangle of Art" comprising the famous Prado Museum, the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum. In Palacio Real a real Egyptian temple brought stone-by-stone from Egypt can be seen. Madrid is also host to Las Ventas - the most famous bullfighting rings in the world. |
