Bilbao is the capital of the province of Vizcaya (Basque: Bizkaia) in Northern Spain and a large industrial and commercial center. It is situated on the river Nervion. Don Diego Lopez Haro V, lord of Vizcaya gave the name of the city in 1300. The next centuries Bilbao was growing rapidly turning into major urban center, spread out on the both sites of river Nervion. In the middle of 15th century in the old citadel one of the most emblematic buildings for Bilbao was built - the gothic temple "Catedral de Santiago" (Santiago Cathedral). The are many other historical and architectural monuments in the city . San Ant?n Church is a gothic building from the 14th century. San Ant?n Bridge is beautiful bridge erected in 19t century on the place of the old medieval bridge. St. James Cathedral was built in 17th century and named after the city's patron St. James. The church became cathedral later in 1949. An elegant fountain designed by Luis Paret during Carlos III's reign can be seen on the beautiful Santiago/ St. James Small Square.
