 About Porto Porto, the second Portugal’s city and capital of the Norte region, is situated on the northern bank of the Douro River where it flows into the Ocean. The country itself owns its name to this beautiful city.
Being an old city which history dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, Porto has lots to offer visitors. During 18-19th centuries the city became an important urban and industrial center. Famous architects of this period worked here and many beautiful building were erected. In 1754 was finished the Tower of the Clerics (Torre dos Clérigos). Designed by the Italian architect Nasoni it soon became the symbol of the city. The Porto University (Aula de Náutica) was founded in 1762 and made the city an academical and cultural center of Portugal. |
