 About Verona Verona is a city, situated in a loop of the Adige River, close to Lake Garda in Northern Italy, region Veneto. Founded as a settlement of the semi-mythical people of Euganei, Verona is a very ancient city. Around 300BC it was annexed by Rome and turned into a flourishing city on the junction of very important roads. The famous Roman amphitheatre of Verona, which large remains can be still seen, was built about 30AD. In 489 AD the Goths conquered Verona and made it the capital of their newly founded kingdom in Italy. Here was the residence of the king Theodoric the Great . Later Verona was included in the the Lombard kingdom where it was the second city in importance. In the Holly Roman Empire Verona was already a seat of a count and a very wealthy and beautiful city, surrounded by strong walls with forty- eight towers. In 1100 Verona was organized as a city state similar to the other Italian republics in this time. In the following century was constructed the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore – a masterpiece of of Romanesque architecture. |
