Hanover is a large city, situated on the river Leine and capital of the Lower Saxony region in central Germany. The city was founded in the medieval times as a small village of fishermen. Its old name is "Honovere" and may be translated as "high bank". In 13-14 centuries Hanover grew into an important commercial and transport center. Beautiful churches with high towers were build and the city was surrounded by high stone walls for protection. The Duchy of Hanover was established in 17th century by the Duke of Calenberg. The golden age of Hanover was in the first half of 19th century when it became the capital of the independent Kingdom of Hanover. The city expanded to the western bank of the river Leine with many beautiful neoclassical buildings. In 1866 The Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by Prussia and became part of the United Germany. Today Hanover is world wide known for hosting commercial expositions such as Hanover Fair and Expo 2000.
