Avignon is the capital of Vaucluse département, southern France. It is situated along the left bank of the river Rhône. The distance to Paris is only 55 miles or 85 km. Avignon was founded in ancient times as a Celtic settlement by the Cavari tribe. Later this settlement grew into a large trading colony of the Phocaean Greeks from Massilia (present Marseilles). Conquered by the Romans Avignon was a flourishing city in the province of Gallia Narbonensis. The most glorious part of the city’s history began in 1309 when it became the Papal residence instead of Rome. The Avignon Papacy continued 68 years. In this period the city was fortified with strong walls. A wonderful Gothic palace - the "Palais des Papes" – was built on a natural spur of rock.
