Balchik Palace

The architectural and park complex "The Palace" is the proud of Balchik. During the occupation of South Dobrudzha by the Romanian military forces the queen of Romania and granddaughter of the British queen Victoria - Maria Alexandrina Victoria de Edinburgh came to Balchik which was a very fashionable seaside resort, popular among the rich Romanian merchants and aristocrats. She was charmed by the beauty of the place and decided to build here her summer residence. For the purpose she brought to Balchik famous architects from Italy and a top gardener from Switzerland. The construction works continued 11 years. The new buildings followed the style of the traditional Bulgarian architecture of the region. Their ground floors are built of the famous Balchik stones. The roofs are covered by the so called Turkish or Greek tiles. The buildings have really preserved the patina and originality of the old Bulgarian home. The queen called her summer palace "The Quiet Nest" and here she spent her most pleasant and romantic moments in solitude and peace. Here is her grave too.

The palace consists of residential villas, restored old water-mills with their stone wheels turned into decorative elements, an Orthodox chapel in Byzantine style, a Roman-Arabic rotonda - Nymphaeum, buildings surrounded by colonnades and inner courts with arcades, water pools and canals in Moorish style. A typical traditional Bulgarian house with a wooden veranda was decorated with a high Muslim minaret, adding some Oriental charm to the palace complex. The steep sea coast was formed into terraces accessible through stone staircase. The natural springs of the place were captured into stone canals with beautiful waterfalls, one of them having a height of 25 m. The old Silver Well was covered according to the Transylvanian traditions.
