Balchik Botanical Garden

Before you understand the meaning of the strange names you will meet in the famous Botanical Garden of Balchik you will be charmed by its beauty. In 1940, after the returning of the region of Southern Dobrudza within the boundaries of Bulgaria, the garden was established on the place of the park which was a part of the summer palace of the Romanian queen. The Botanical Garden occupies an area of 35.000 square meters and accommodate more than 3000 plant species, among which only the cactuses are 250 species. This is the largest collection of cactuses in Europe. The garden has been planned in form that resembles the Cretan labyrinth. An entire church was brought here from the Island of Crete stone by stone. The full length of the alley leading to the Silver Well is lined by earthen jars brought here from the faraway Morocco. Fragrant flowers form motley carpets between centuries old trees, overgrown by lianas and hiding coolness and tranquility. The beautiful Bridge of Sighs can be seen next to the water-mills in the garden. The nearby alleys are flanked by interesting earthenware in which corn was kept centuries ago, alternating with ancient Roman grave stones and Arabic stone inscriptions.
