 About Strasbourg Strasbourg is a large city in Northeastern France close to the border with Germany, capital of the region of Alsace. In German the name of the city means “town at the crossing of roads”. Strasbourg is world wide known as the seat of the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. The city was founded as a Roman military outpost on the border of the Germania Superior province. After the collapse of the Roman Empire Strasbourg was conquered successively by Alamanni, Huns and Franks. In the Middle Ages the city was included in the Holy Roman Empire and in 1332 it declared itself a free republic. The city center is considered a World Heritage site by the UNESCO. It has a remarkable look with its medieval Rhineland black and white timber-framed buildings combined with the neo-classic architecture and the sandstone gothic cathedral Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. |
