Sofia is probably one of the oldest European cities. Founded as a Thracian town in the "Dark Ages" after the Trojan War, it became an important Roman city with the name "Serdica", situated on Via Militaris, the great road that connected the eastern Roman provinces with the western ones. Sofia was capital of the Roman province of Dacia Mediteranea and the favorite residence city of the emperor Constantine the Great who had often said "Serdica, this is my Rome". St. Sofia church and the round church of St. George are among the earliest known Christian temples in the world that a few European cities can boast with. Another landmark is the cathedral Alexander Nevski – the tallest church on the Balkans and a reflection of the Bulgarian spirit and ambition after reaching independence from the Ottoman Empire. Today Sofia is a very much alive and kicking city, growing rapidly and offering many restaurants, bars and night clubs that cater for all tastes.
