 About Marseille Marseille is the largest commercial port in the Mediterranean and the second most populous
city in
France.
The history of the city started in the early 600BC when Phocaean Greeks founded here a trading port with the name
"Massalia". In
the Roman
empire the city was known as "Massilia". There are many interesting tourist sites in Marseille.
The old horbour of the city deserves to be
seen. The
Neo-Byzantine church Notre-Dame de la Garde is located on the highest point of the city - the top of the single hill
La Garde.The church
was built in the
second half of 19th century over 13th century chapel. Near Marseille can be visited
the ancient prison island Chateau d'If, where
the The Count of Monte
Cristo was prisoned in the popular novel.
The coastal line near Marseille is extremely picturesque. Here can be seen "Massif
des Calanques" - geologically
formed deep valley with steep sites
and a part submerged by the sea. |
