Mallorca is a an island in the Mediterranean Sea, one of the Balearic Islands, which are situated close to the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Mallorca is a very popular tourist destination and a favorite destination for the so called birdwatchers. The name of the island comes from the Latin “insula maior” or “major island” in English. The city of Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the island and of the whole autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Mallorca has a rich history. It was inhabited in the Prehistory for which evidence the discovered burial chambers from 6000-4000 BC. In the Antiquity Mallorca was occupied by the Carthaginians until 123 BC when it was conquered by the Roman military leader Quintus Caecilius Metellus. Flourishing cities which economy was based on the olive cultivation, salt mining and viniculture were founded during the Roman rule. The island was sacked by the Vandals in 426. In the following centuries Mallorca was part of the Byzantine Empire and numerous churches, masterpieces of the early medieval architecture, were built. In 902 the Moors conquered the island and developed improved agriculture with irrigation. Mallorca was possessed by the Muslims till 1229 when James I of Aragon annexed the island to the Crown of Aragon.
