 About Lisbon Lisbon (or Lisboa in Portuguese) is the largest city and capital of Portugal. It is one of the
warmest
capitals in Europe. The city was founded as a trading Phoenician settlement on the estuary of the river Tagus The downtown of Lisbon (called
Baixa) is
considered for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Almost all of its buildings are constructed after 1755 when a devastating earthquake
ruined most of the
medieval town.
The downtown – Baixa is organized in a grid-system and a network of squares. Lisbon is also called “the city of
the seven hills”. The Castle
of Sao Jorge the Santa Maria Maior Cathedral are located on the top of the tallest hill. Lisbon is rich in
architecture. In almost every part of the city can
be found interesting constructions in Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Traditional
Portuguese, Modern and Post-Modern styles. Many museums can be
visited in Lisbon - National Museum of Ancient Art, Museum of Portuguese-style Tile
Mosaics, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and more. |
