It was very important sea port in the period of the Portuguese exploration (15th century). Although the city was seriously destroyed by the earthquake in 1755, it still preserves some perfect examples of the old Portuguese architecture. Among the points of interest are the city walls from 16th century, the governor’s castle, the old slave market and, of course, the beautiful beaches situated along the scenic coast line of Algarve. |
